What is AR?

Some of you may not be familiar with Accelerated Reader® or “AR”. AR is a software program developed by Renaissance Learning. Research has shown that improved reading skill & comprehension is correlated to the amount of time-spent reading. The program was designed as an incentive program to encourage children (independent readers) to practice reading. Children read an AR book and then they take a computerized multiple-choice quiz with 5 or more questions. The children earn points based on the difficulty of the book and their percent correct. The program keeps track of their results and teachers can check their progress. The software will only allow a child to take a quiz one time per book. The program is most beneficial for reluctant readers. It is especially successful when children are reading books that are designated at their level and they have read a book for meaning. If you have additional questions about this program, you can contact the Riverside Media Center if you have additional questions.

What is the AR Wall of Fame?

The AR Wall of Fame is posted behind the Media Center and updated at the end of each nine week grading period. The minimum points needed in each grade level to earn a place on the Wall of Fame are as follows:  First Grade is 5 points, Second Grade is 15 points, Third Grade is 25 points, Fourth Grade is 50 points, and Fifth grade is 75 points. At the end of the year, the PTA supplies rewards for the top 40 point earners on each grade level, the top point earner on each grade level, the top point earner in the school, and the teacher with the highest class points on each grade level.

My child says they are a/an (insert color) dot.  What does that mean and what number do I use when searching the AR list?

AR levels their quizzes based on the difficulty of the book. The levels range from 0.0 to 8.0 and higher. These levels are not synonymous with a grade level. In other words a child's grade equivalency and their AR book level are not equal numbers. We have coded the AR books in the Media Center with a colored dot on the spine to make it easier and quicker for the children to choose their books. The chart below will help you at home when choosing AR books from the Quiz List Interactive.

Proper form for bibliographies is important in a research report.  The media center recommends the following bibliographical forms for print and non-print materials at each grade level.  These forms are based, with some revisions, on several basic sources.  As styles for citing electronic works, such as CD-ROMs and information taken from the internet, are evolving, these examples might be revised over the year.  If you don’t find the example you need, take a look at the next higher grade level.
